This book contains chapters on dubbing versus subtitling, on the history and technique of subtitling, and deals with matters such as reading speed en synchronization, subtitle typography, layout and readability. It also describes subtitling for the hearing impaired audience, including “simultaneous subtitling”, takes up possible future developments of different techniques and gives advice on modern subtitling equipment. The main part of the book, however, deals with the practical aspects of the subtitler’s work: how to time, edit and present the subtitles, what one should and should not do, the importance of conventions and the differences in subtitling for various media.
