The volume presents portraits of individuals who had to leave Austria because they could no longer live and work in National Socialist Austria. The selection criterion was their translation activity, regardless of whether they were already translators before exile, only became translators in exile, or even only after their return, and regardless of the role translation plays in their overall activity, i.e. whether they were primarily translators or "also" translated. From these portraits emerges a very diverse picture of Austrian translators in exile, their lives and escape routes, their successes and failures, of which all too little is known to the public.
