Abstract

The article examines the first translations (c. 1969) into English of Kundera's work. These were very target-oriented, condensed and normalized, with very few restrictions. English-speaking critics did not seem to have any grounds for complaint but Kundera was extremely angry. In 1970 a new translation was published which was closer to the original but it was not until 1983 that a new version acceptable to the author came out.
