Abstract

The article sets out to explore the intricate relations that exist in the world of subtitling. The double focus of this research regards (i) the practice of subtitling in Cyprus and (ii) the use or omission of the local Cypriot dialect. The choice of the Cypriot television offered the opportunity to see the interplay (or sometimes the antagonistic relation ) between the dialect and the standard Greek variety. The choice of T.V. as opposed to cinema was also interesting because of its large impact on an equally large and heterogeneous audience. The use of different channels revealed the difference in the mentality of people in charge of the process of subtitling and therefore the type and quality of the subtitles. The research was based on video-taped data, interviews and previous statistics and showed that the Cypriot dialect is vying for linguistic supremacy and has been successful so far.
