Abstract

Schmitt draws attention to the central role of the concept of 'text' in translation. In this article, he takes a closer look at what the concept actually means. He argues in favour of a semiotic text definition which grants importance not only to verbal, but also to non-verbal signs as text-constitutive elements. He points at the importance of these signs in intercultural communication and at the translator's role in transferring those elements into other cultures.
