With the objective of fostering Catalonia’s self-determination referendum of 2014, Catalan civil society translated several documents promoting the Autonomous Community’s independence from Spain. Translated into many languages, including English, French, Spanish and German, these translation efforts aimed at promoting independence at the international level. Such use of translation can be seen as an emancipation, propaganda or manipulation tool, depending on one’s own political standpoint.
