Abstract

In 1924, the Slovene Louis Adamič (1898-1951) published his translation of one of the canonized Slovene short stories: Ivan Cankar’s Hlapec Jernej in njegova pravica. This work was translated into English twice, first by Adamič in 1924 and again in 1930 by Sidonie Years and H. C. Sewell Grant. The latter version was published again in 1968 in Ljubljana. The aim of this article is to reveal the norms that governed Louis Adamič in his work by focusing on the biblical style and religious overtones which characterize the original, and to see whether the translator overstepped his rights when transposing the text into English. It is based on an exhaustive study in which the author compared the original’s most typical instances of more or less changed quotations from the Bible, allusively biblical words and typical biblical sentence structures with their translation equivalents in both English versions.
