Amato was an Italian author who migrated to New Zealand, where he wrote his fiction in English. He describes in his short story One of the Titans, an encounter in Italy between an Italian and an English-speaking bank teller. There is some form of miscommunication and misunderstanding between these two characters. One thing that becomes clear from the example, is the following: interpreting goes beyond translating spoken sentences from one language to another, word for word. It demands a knowledge of the way in which both languages are used, which includes their idioms, their figures of speech, their metaphors, their similes, as well as the values, goals and communication styles of those individuals and groups using them.
