This article aims at discussing the problems involved when translating a text that is written in several languages at the same time. The discussion departs from the challenges of translating Glória Andaldúa’s book chapter “How to tame a wild tongue”, part of her Borderlands/La frontera: the new mestiza (1999). The author mixes English, Spani, Nahuatl and some variants of these languages. Following the deconstructivist critique of the ideal of monolingualism (Derrida, 2002) and the concept of border thinking (Mignolo, 2003), the author seeks to analyse the consequences that pluri languaging, in other words, the hybridization of hegemonic languages with subaltern languages, brings to the practice of translation. One of such consequences is the critique of the asymmetry in relations of translation, in that hybrid languages are compelled to conform to hegemonic languages. Anzaldúa’s piece is committed to that critique, and, therefore, we need to recognise the hierarchical relations between languages and the way the author subverts these hierarchies, in order to avoid getting her pluri langauging lost in translation. In this sense, the author discusses some difficulties and alternatives to maintain in the translation of “How to tame a wild tongue” into Portuguese the hybrid relation between English and Spanish.
