Abstract

Annotation in translation is a kind of paratext, which is not only an important reference for the target language readers to understand the work, but also provides many clues for revealing translation activities. Sinologists' translation is the result of their observation, research and thinking, and the main place for translators to "appear". Through a comparative analysis of the translation of Liao Zhai Zhi Yi by Vasily Mikhaylovich Alekseyev and Herbert Allen Giles, this paper finds that the different methods which the two Sinologists used in writing annotations not only reflect their translation value orientation and translation ethics, but also show their cultural position and psychological demands in the process of interpreting Chinese culture.
