Abstract

The chapter deals with the translation of songs in two Hebrew translations of Lewis Carroll's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The first translation (by L. Siman) was published in Germany in 1923. Reflecting a contemporary approach to the translation of children's literature into Hebrew, it replaces the original songs, which are parodies on Victorian lyrics, by parodies on Hebrew texts, including sacred ones, read by Jewish children at that time. The second translation (by A. Amir) was published in Israel in 1951. Reflecting a more modern approach to the translation of children's literature into Hebrew, it preserves the original content and rhythm of Lewis Carroll's songs.
