Abstract

It is often difficult to translate terms belonging to different systems. But these translation problems are not always insurmountable. The dragomans who made these translations encountered these terminological obstacles. Military terminology is one of those problematic areas because of the difference in military systems. In this article, the author analyzes four Ottoman terms (asker, ser-asker, ser-kerde, ser-dâr) proposed by the dragomans of the Ottoman delegation to translate the military terms present in the original Italian of the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca signed between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire in 1774. They will be analyzed in order to understand how these Ottoman dragomans were able to solve or bypass the difficulties of military terminology. The author will also study the strategies put in place by the dragomans of the Russian delegation to translate the military terms of the Italian text.
