Mounin, Georges. 1963. Les problèmes théoriques de la traduction [Theoretical problems of translation] (Bibliothèque des Idées). Paris: Gallimard. 304 pp.

Abstract

The underlying idea of this book is that translation deserves careful analysis from a linguistic angle. The first chapter serves to demonstrate that translation is a legitimate topic for linguistic investigation, because it is a superb example of languages in contact. The author examines the theories of general linguistics in order to see what light they may throw on a theory of translation. The next part deals with the linguistic obstacles to translation – those aspects of linguistic theory which would lead inevitably to the conclusion that it is impossible to translate from one language to another. Most of the rest of the book is then devoted to a detailed discussion of these three theoretical obstacles: lexicon, world views and cultures.
