Abstract

This article discusses some theoretical and practical issues related to subtitling sociolects, based on the subtitling of the Cameroonian film Quartier Mozart. After presenting the main features of spoken Cameroonian French in the film, the article discusses the translation solutions adopted in the English subtitles (from oral to written). Then, based on the concept of ethical translation put forward by Berman (1984) and Venuti (1998), the article demonstrates that to successfully recreate the illusion of reality and above all to avoid the linguistic strangeness which is evident in the original dialogue, the subtitlers can inject forms drawn from Pidgin English, one of the vehicular languages spoken in Cameroon.
