Abstract

One simplifying narrative of the history of translation is that it has moved, generally, from sometimes predatory or coopting approaches toward those that reflect more respect for the original text. But what does respect look like when not only language but cultural and conceptual values are being translated, when what is expressed in a grammar is a way of understanding the world? And how do such questions affect the art of translation of poetry, the high-wire performances of language, into English? Referencing translations from Aymara, Lakota, Spanish, Japanese, and other languages, a practicing poet-translator discusses the risks, strategies, and presumed responsibilities that complicate his art.
