Abstract

There exists a great diversity in the use of the terms 'correspondence' and 'equivalence'. Therefore the author argues that it is necessary to define these terms more precisely because this terminological problem determines to a great extent the thoughts of researchers when referring to the interpretative theory of translation. The author illustrates the difference between correspondence and equivalence by means of two excerpts from the French translation of Vikram Seth's A Suitable Boy. Next the author looks into the distinction between correspondences 'a priori' and 'a posteriori', discusses the relation between equivalence and deverbalisation and finally the term 'synecdoche' is further explained.
