Abstract

In this article, the author argues that the indifferent reaction in the German literary world towards A Vindication of the Rights of Woman is partly due to the translator’s positioning strategies that failed to recognize and respect Wollstonecraft’s specific historical discourse position and the resulting rhetoricity in the text. The article looks at samples of Wollstonecraft’s text, with special regard to positioning and addressing, and then compares these with the strategies in the German texts.
