In the present study, an analysis of Oscar Mendes’s translation of the theatre play A Woman with no Importance, by Oscar Wilde is carried out. Initially, the Victorian context was described, as well as a brief biography of the author, followed by his main works. Oscar Wilde’s emphasis was conferred to Oscar Mendes’s works, who is the translator of the selected comedy. Translation theory and drama translation concepts were presented and the play was analyzed in terms of its plot elements, and of the linguistic resources utilized, such as the maintenance of irony, paradoxes and word play in the author’s social criticism expression. The results indicate a possibly neutralizing translation project with the option for archaisms as well as formal register. The fact that a comedy translation is devoid of vernacular language characteristics were highlighted. We argue that the translator’s time and context possibly contributed to his translation choices, and, as a consequence, they seem adequate. More informal language and lexis is recommended in the concepts of Readability and Performability. These concepts normally favor reading and the adaptation of the literary text to the theatre, particularly in the case of society comedies.
