In this chapter, the author attempts to apply the pushing-hands approach to collaborative translation on two levels. Lee first seeks to apply it on the historical level as she considers it a traditional Chinese translation practice. The translation of Buddhist scriptures is used to illustrate how this practice may contribute to the discipline as one focuses on the “multi-layered” process of translating. In the second part, she applies it on the practical level with a close examination of the teamwork of two translators translating a collection of Chinese Chan Buddhist poems into English. Lee argues that not only the translators, but also the readers of the translations will gain as the translators push hands. Cheung’s model encourages one to facilitate “continuous dialogic engagement” with various agents (e.g. fellow translators, experts and informants) and discourages confrontation between “source” and “target”, “author” and “reader”, as well as simplistic binary thinking.
