Abstract

This article consists of a collection of notes on the translation of poetry. Holmes reflects on issues like equivalence, the translator’s choices (illustrated by his own English translation of Martinus Nijhoff’s poems Ad Infinitum and De Grot), and the phenomenon of linguistic "interlocking" (also illustrated by his own translation into English of School der poëzie by Lucebert and Glazenwasser by Gerrit Achterberg). His rendering of Paul Snoek’s Rustiek langschapje serves to illustrate how translating poetry is mainly a matter of making choices between less-than-perfect possibilities.
