Abstract

The works of Marie-Claire Blais, an important contemporary Québec writer, have been translated into English by some 12 different translators. The article seeks to understand whether multiple translators have reduced the author’s unity of voice in English, and if so, how. The focus is on three translations from different editorial contexts: A Season in the Life of Emmanuel, translated by Derek Coltman and published in New York by Farrar, Straus & Giroux in 1966, and two translations by Canadian translator Sheila Fischman: A Literary Affair, published in 1979 in Toronto by McClelland and Stewart, and These Festive Nights, published in Toronto by Anansi in 1997.
