Abstract
Two translations of A.P. Chekhov’s narrative A Dreary Story into French are described. The realization of the basic concept “dreary” and its semantic components (monotony and estrangement) are in the center of the author’s attention. Some difficulties connected with a number of objective features of the language and complexity of the work itself are analyzed.
