Abstract

In 1980s when Chinese Opening-up and Reform began, women’s writing, like vanguard, emerged to be the bridge for western readers to know about China. However, the search in CNKI reveals that studies on female writing and translation are very few, indicating that the lack of gender study calls for a research. Female writing closely relates to social memory of Chinese culture and that of “female nature” as a typical China’s image in Western world. This research follows the framework of cultural memory and translation studies. Two works, a translation and an autobiography of contemporary female writers (A Cadre School Life by Yang Jiang, Wild Swans by Jung Chang) are selected as the case study. The analysis inquires how the contemporary China writing enters into English world by means of (cultural) translation during Opening-up and Reform in 1980s and 1990s. The focus of this case study is the “symbiosis” among (female) writers, (official) publishers, (cultural) translators, commentators and (English) readers in the above process.
