Paul Celan was first translated into Catalan in 1966 by Artur Quintana in the anthology A la paret, escrit amb guix. Poesia alemanya de combat. A decade later, six years after Celan's death, Antoni Pous translated and published a selection of twenty-three poems into Catalan. A further twenty years was needed for other works by Celan to appear in Catalan: in 1996 a translation of Atemkristall was published by Arnau Pons coinciding with the edition of a special number of the journal Reduccions dedicated to Celan with a reedition of some of Pous' versions and new translations by Jordi Ibañez and by Andreu Vidal & Karen Andrea Müller. After a revision of Celan's reception into the Catalan literary environment the author here analyzes three different versions of the same poem, in order to see the multiple interpretative possibilities offered by a literary oeuvre characterized by both complexity and purity of style.
