Az „adaptáció” olyan fogalom, amelyet széles körben használnak a film, a televízió, a zene, a tánc és más médiumok területén. Azonban a terminológia az adaptáció terén rendkívül összetett és gyakran zavart keltő. A különböző szakszavak árnyalatainak részletes elemzése nem tartozik jelen szócikk céljai közé, de érdemes néhány, a területen gyakran használt, többnyire önmagukban is beszédes szakkifejezést megemlíteni: adaptáció, kisajátítás, új kontextusba helyezés, tradaptáció, spinoff, zanza, egyszerűsítés, tömörítés, rövidített változat, speciális verzió, újrafeldolgozás, származtatott változat, átalakítás, remedializáció, újraértelmezés.
