言語学習や言語習得（注１）は、翻訳に必須であることは言うまでもないが、翻訳が言語学習と言語習得においてどのような役割を果たすかは、西洋（欧米）（注２）での翻訳研究と言語教授法において議論の対象となってきた。言語の指導と学習の現場から、「ナチュラル・メソッド」と呼ばれる教授法の支持者により、文法訳読式教授法が追放されて以降、ほとんどの言語教授法の専門家は、特に初等・中等レベルでの教育システムにおいて、翻訳を言語教育における有益な教授法または、補助手段として推奨しない傾向にある。とはいえ、いまだに翻訳は有益であると考える教員も多い（Pym, Malmkjær & Plana, 2013; Laviosa, 2014を参照）。
