Suhtlusvõrgustikes teabe jagamine, vahetamine ja kasutamine ühendab üksteisega seotud inimesi ning on pikaaegne laialt levinud sotsiaalne praktika. Selline võrgustikes tegutsemise praktika omandas uued ja täiustatud mõõtmed pärast info- ja kommunikatsioonitehnoloogiate omaks- ja kasutuselevõttu 20. sajandi lõpus ning peamiselt tehnika abil, mis hõlmab arvuteid, juhtmevaba internetti ning mobiiltelefone. Tehnoloogial on olnud oluline ja mitmekülgne roll tänapäevases globaliseerumises, olles nii platvorm üleilmsele laienemisele kui ka kaitstes kohalikke tavasid ja kombeid.
