Az újrafordítás (mint termék) egy forrásszöveg második, vagy későbbi fordítására utal, ugyanarra a célnyelvre. Az újrafordítást (mint folyamatot) tehát jellemző módon olyan jelenségnek tekinthetjük, ami egy idő múlva fordul elő, de gyakorlatban léteznek egyidejű, vagy közel egyidejű fordítások is, ami néha megnehezíti vagy lehetetlenné teszi, hogy az egyiket első, a másikat pedig második fordításként rangsoroljuk. Néhány kutató a közvetett vagy reléfordításokat is az újrafordítás fogalmának keretein belül tárgyalja, de ez a fajta keretezés valószínűleg inkább félrevezető, mint hasznos, és jelen cikkben újrafordítás alatt csak az ugyanarra a nyelvre készült többedik fordítást értjük.
