Tõlkimise mõiste sidumisele ajaloo mõistega saab läheneda kahest aspektist: milline tähendus on tõlkel ajaloo ja eriti erinevate kultuuripraktikate (poliitika, teadus, religioon, keel, meedia, kirjandus jne) mõistmisel? Milline tähendus on ajalool erinevate tõlkevormide mõistmisel (protsess, produkt, troop, institutsioon, teooria jne)? Olgugi et mõlemad aspektid on kahtlemata piisavalt huvitavad, et neid kumbagi omaette uurida, on edaspidi seatud neist esiplaanile viimane, kus ajalugu mõistetakse kui kindlat vaatenurka, mida rakendatakse erinevate materiaalsete objektide suhtes, mis kannavad ühisnimetust „tõlge“. Muidugi ei ole vaja meenutada, et nii nagu iga teaduslik vaatenurk, hõlmab ka ajalooline vaatenurk metodoloogilist reduktsiooni pärismaailma suhtes.
