A fordítástudomány (TS) számottevően kölcsönöz más tudományágaktól, megkockáztatva, hogy terminológiája zavarossá válik: megsokszorozódnak az úgynevezett szinonimák (pl. fordítás, adaptálás, lokalizálás), poliszémiák (pl. kultúra, funkció, ekvivalencia), és a nem tisztázott vagy pontatlan fogalmak (pl. hasonlóság, rendszer, szöveg, anyanyelv). A „stratégia” a fordítástudomány egyik ilyen kétértelmű terminusa: nemcsak különbözőképpen használják, hanem az angolban verseng egy tucat más terminussal is: eljárások, módszerek, műveletek, átváltások, változtatások, metódusok, behelyettesítések stb. A különböző elnevezések mögött egy fogalommal van dolgunk, vagy különböző fogalmakkal, amelyeket majdnem szinonimaként használt terminusok fejeznek ki?
