Стаття «Перекладознавство» („Translation Studies‟) у « Довіднику з перекладознавства » (Handbook of Translation Studies) наражається на ризик вважатися зайвою,   поверхневою чи  непродуманим приступом самокопання. Врешті решт, те, що відбувається у перекладознавстві безперечно буде висвітлено в інших статтях довідника, що простягаються від «Адаптації» (“Adaptation”) до «Інтернет та переклад» “Web and translation”. Та термін перекладознавство (Translation Studies) є далеко не безперечним і в цій статті здійснюється спроба зменшити ризики, зосередившись на його істотних рисах, історії, розвиткові та ідеях, починаючи з другої половини ХХ сторіччя. Ця стаття може служити певним контекстом для розуміння тих царин, які розглядаються докладніше в інших місцях цього тому, та для висунення на передній план окремих суперечливих питань.
