This paper proposes a three-tiered approach to genre analysis. A system of generic stages is derived from configurations of options from the systems of transitivity, mood, theme, conjunction, reference and tense. Generic structures, motivated by context-specific generic strategies, are, in turn, derived from generic stages. The approach is applied to a small corpus of press articles dealing with the relation between parents and children.
