Heidelberg : Carl Winter Universitätsverlag , ISBN 3-533-04180-8 kart. , [xii], 335 pp. [ Der Hauptteil (pp. 66–255) dieser, der Geschichte der deutschen Sprache gewidmeten, Arbeit behandelt lexikonartig jenen Teil des deutschen Wortschatzes, welcher der Rezeption der Französischen Revolution sein Entstehen verdankt; Unterkapitel befassen sich dabei mit dem “Wortschatz des Parlaments und der Verfassung”, “… der Verwaltung”, “… der politischen Gruppierungen”, “… der revolutionären Justiz”, “… des Wirtschafts- und Finanzwesens” sowie einer Restkategorie, “De[m] allgemeine[n] politische[n] Wortschatz”. Wortbildungsmorpheme und Typen der Wortzusammensetzung werden in einem weiteren Kapitel besprochen. Diese Untersuchungen sind eingebettet in eine Skizze zum “Geschicht-liche[n] Hintergrund”, einen “Forschungsüberblick” sowie eine Präsentation des “Quellenmaterial[s]”. Abgesehen von der Unsitte, umfangreiche Anmerkungen an das Ende der einzelnen Kapitel zu stellen, ist die Arbeit sehr gut lesbar und informativ. Das “Stichwortregister” am Ende des Bandes erschließt diese, dem Historigraphen der deutschen Sprache sicherlich willkommene Neuerscheinung. – HJN .]

Der zweite Teil des Buches enthält Aufsätze verschiedener Autoren zu folgenden Themen: ‘Das Siglo de Oro: Historischer Überblick’, ‘Sprachliche Veränderungen und das Bewußtsein der Sprachenvielfalt im Spanien des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts’, ‘Sprachur-sprungstheorien’, ‘Form und Funktion der Prologe’, ‘Grammatische Kategorien’, ‘Das Problem der sprachlichen Norm und ihre Kodifizierung’, ‘Lexikographie im Siglo de Oro’; eine Bibliographie beschließt den Band (pp. 204–223). Insgesamt gesehen kann man dieser Neuerscheinung eine Fülle guter Ideen und interessanter sprach- und wissenschaftsgeschichtlicher Denkanstöße bescheinigen. Leider muß man aber gleichzeitig auch eine sehr hohe Zahl von (teilweise sinnstörenden) Druckfehlern vermelden, die es angeraten erscheinen lassen, keine der Angaben des Buches ungeprüft zu übernehmen. – HJN .]

The papers are arranged under 3 major headings: I, “Syntax und Morphologie”; II, “Syntax und Pragmatik”, and II, “Syntax im zeitgenössischen Bewußtsein”. The volume reflects the on-going ‘Methodendiskussion’ in historical linguistics, the infusion of sociolinguistic and ‘pragmatic’ considerations in the explanation of linguistic change. Among the contributors, the bulk of which came from all corners of East and West Germany, are scholars from Finland (3), The Netherlands (2), Switzerland (2), Sweden (2), the United States (2), Austria (1), and Lithuania (1). They include the following scholars: Rudolf Grosse, Werner Abraham, Joachim Schildt, Jarmo Korhonen, Dieter Cherubim, Stefan Sonderegger, Terence Wilbur, Helmut Ebert. It constitutes one of the most important – on most enduring – books in 20th-century linguistic theory. Various earlier attempts at an English translation, going back to the 1960s and early 1970s failed in part because of the tremendous demands on the translator to attain the fullness of expression and erudition that Bühler brought to his subject. Münster : Nodus , ISBN 389323-220-6 , 171 pp. [ Der Band enthält eine Reihe von Aufsätzen, welche sich, laut Vorwort der Herausgeber, mit jener Zeit befassen, in der ‘die Folgen von Babel’ nicht mehr als Negativum gesehen werden, sondern wo alles “lead to an increased awareness of the value of the diversity and cultural specificness of languages” (p. 7). – Lo Piparo (“Two Linguistic Paradigms Compared”) vergleicht, ein wenig holzschnittartig, “the biblical paradigm” [‘Sprache vom Anfang an’] mit “the Aristotelian[?]-Vichian paradigm”: “In the beginning language is absent and there is a need to speak and explain the world” (p. 13). – Formigari (“Pantomime and the Philosophers”) deutet Vicos Metaphern-Begriff als “the instrument, or the very principle of language production” (p. 24). – Gensini bietet einen gut dokumentierten Beitrag zur Genese der Unterscheidung zwischen ‘Wort’ und Terminus’ in der Mitte des 17. Jhdt. (“Terminus: Scientific Language vs. Ordinary Language from Galileo to Leibniz”). – Pennisi (“« Numerare » et « discorrere » dans la tradition italienne du verum-factum”) stellt die, von Vico als Dichotomie gesehene, Unterscheidung zwischen natürlicher Sprache und Sprache der Mathematik in den Mittelpunkt seiner Untersuchungen. – Auroux (“La tradition française d’analyse linguistique, 1660–1822”) unterstreicht die Bedeutung, die der frz. Absolutismus für die Herausbildung einer Tradition der Sprachanalyse gehabt hat; dem Beitrag ist ein vierseitiger chronologischer Überblick beigegeben. – Marazzini (“Linguistique vaticane. Les missionaires et le sanskrit à Rome et en Italie à la fin du XVIIIe siècle”) befaßt sich eingehend mit den sprachwissenschaftlichen Arbeiten von Paulin de Saint-Barthélémie und des mit ihm befreundeten Lorenzo Hervás y Panduro, welche jedoch, trotz ihrer Qualtäten, nicht zur Begründung einer vergleichenden Sprachwissenschaft in Italien geführt haben. – Simone (“Languages as méthodes analytiques in Condillac”) erörtert Condillacs Auffassung, Sprachen seien unterschiedlich geeignete Instrumente zur Analyse von Gedanken; das Französische “fait plus d’analyses, et […] les fait le mieux” (p. 106). – Trabant (“Von der Einbildungskraft zum Sprachsinn”) beschäftigt sich mit Humboldt und seiner Auffassung, wonach Sprachen nicht so sehr “Mittel sind, die schon erkannte Wahrheit darzustellen, sondern […] die vorher unerkannte zu entdecken” (vgl. p.l15). – Di Cesare (“Die Sprachlichkeit des Ichs: Ansätze zu einer Philosophie des Dialogs bei Friedrich Schlegel”) entwickelt einfühlsam die Auffassung des Autors einer Philosophie der Philologie (1797), wonach Sprache nicht lediglich ein Mittel der Erkenntnisvermittlung, sondern Erkenntnis schlechthin ist, “insofern sie von Anfang an dialogisch ist” (p.l30). – Ricken (“Wilhelm von Humboldt, Jacob Grimm und das Problem des Sprachursprungs: Zur sprachtheoretischen Rezeption der Aufklärung im 19. Jahrhundert.”) zeichnet an Hand der Debatte um den Ursprung der menschlichen Sprache die Positionen der wichtigsten Linguisten der 1. Hälfte des 19. Jhdt. (und ihre Auseinandersetzung mit Naturwissenschaft und Theologie) nach. – In einem “Nachwort” gibt Tullio de Mauro dann noch seine Sicht von der Genese der Wissenschaftsgeschichte der Sprachwissenschaft. . 1990 . Die Entwicklung des Galizischen <sic!> zur modernen Kultursprache: Eine Fallstudie zur aktuellen Sprachplanung . (= Abhandlungen zur Sprache und Literatur; 28 .) [ Diese sehr interessante Neuerscheinung basiert im Theoretischen auf den Arbeiten von Heinz Kloss (vgl. namentlich sein 1969 erschienenes Buch Grundfragen der Ethnopolitik im 20. Jahrhundert., Wien & Stuttgart: W. Braunmüller). Insbesondere der von K. eingeführte Begriff des ‘Ausbaustatus’ einer Sprache hat sich im Laufe der Zeit als fruchtbar erwiesen. Darunter werden verschiedene Phasen der Sprachverwendung verstanden, welche von der simplen Niederschrift von Volksliedern “im Dialekt” über die Verwendung in humoristischen Dichtungen, dann in (u.a.) kleineren Zeitschriftenaufsätzen, Sachschrifttum, Lehrbüchern bis hin zu amtlichen Schriftstücken reicht. Bereits Adelung und Vater hatten mit dem Terminus ‘Ausbildung’ ähnliches bezeichnet und damals namentlich schon Grammatiken und Lexika der ‘auszubildenden’ sprachlichen Varietät mit als Indiz für den ‘Ausbaustatus’ herangezogen. So tut es auch die Verfasserin. Ihr Buch bekommt dadurch Bedeutung für diejenigen, die sich für die Geschichte der Sprachwissenschaft interessieren. Sie informiert darin ausführlich und zuverlässig (auch) über die Geschichte der Beschreibung des galicischen Wortschatzes und der Grammatik, wobei deren Anfänge bei den frühen dialektologischen Untersuchungen des 18. Jhdts., beim Padre Sarmiento und bei Feijóo liegen. (Warum die Verfasserin bei der Orthographie von ‘Galicisch’ vom Duden abweicht, bleibt unerfindlich). – HJN .]

Kap. 2. befaßt sich mit “Gli studi etimologici nel sec. XVII”; sie stehen ganz im Zeichen des Franzosen Ménage. Versuche der Crusca, ein eigenes ‘etymologisches’ Wörterbuch zu erstellen, scheitern, genau so wie manche unfaire Machenschaften, Ménage an der Publikation seiner Origini della lingua italiana (1666–1669) zu hindern. Auf italienischer Seite ist lediglich der (originelle und bislang wenig untersuchte) Versuch Ottavio Ferraris (1607–1682) in seinen Origines linguœ italicœ (1676) zu verzeichnen, wo er bei der Frage nach der Herkunft der Wörter auch die Dialekte mit einbezieht. Kap. 3. (“Una linguistica per la storia”) zeichnet die Hinwendung zu einem minutiösen Textstudium mit Giustino Fontanini (1666–1736) und namentlich Ludovico Antonio Muratori (1672–1750), wobei die Straßburger Eide und die Wertung ihrer Sprache geradezu eine forschungsleitende Funktion bekommen. Kap. 4. (“Storia linguistica e storia letteraria nel sec. XVIII”) zeigt, wie es im Rahmen der Literaturgeschichtsschreibung des 18. Jhdt. zu einer Neuformulierung der Frage nach dem Ursprung des Italienischen (und der italienischen Literatur) kommt. Im Zentrum des umfangreichen Kap. 5 (“Nuovi orizzonti della linguistica: l’eredità di de Brosses e la scoperta del sanscrito”) steht das Schaffen des bedeutenden, von seiner Zeit jedoch rasch marginalisierten Linguisten Carlo Denina, der sein Hauptwerk, den Clef des langues, an der Berliner Akademie verfaßte, bevor er sich ins Paris Napoleons und der Ideologen begab. Die Entdeckung des Sanskrit (Paolino da San Bartolomeo) führt um dieselbe Zeit zu einer Intensivierung der Frage nach der Sprachverwandtschaft jener Sprachen, die später als i.-e. Sprachen zusammengefaßt werden. Das 6. (und letzte) Kapitel schließlich behandelt “La linguistica italiana tra classicisti e romantici”, welche zunächst große Affinität zu Frankreich (namentlich Raynouard) zeigt. Literarische Dokumente werden zur Basis des sprachwissenschaftlichen Diskurses und A. W. Schlegels Einfluß macht sich geltend. However, the author, while emphasizing that the various explanations (which frequently have been given in terms of a model) and (as a consequence) tended to treat linguistic change as independent of the speakers and their extralinguistic (especially social) situation, does not offer a framework of her own (unlike what the text on the back cover of the book promises where it is said that ‘The authoress has, for the first time [in historical linguistics], applied the findings concerning causality in the modern natural sciences, in particular quantum physics, to phonetic developments’). Instead, she offers a survey of various approaches to language change from the Junggrammatiker via Saussure, Jespersen, Horn & Lehnert, and many others to Chomsky & Halle and more recent proposals (such as those by William S-Y.
