SUMMARY
The Educated Standard and the Broadcast Standard:
Spanish /s/ and /n/
This study represents an investigation of two phonological variables, the pronunciation of /n/ and /s/, in various dialects of Latin American Spanish. A comparison is established between the quantitative behavior of these phonemes in normal speech patterns and the styles that characterize radio broadcasting, with the aim of demonstrating the existence of a hierarchy of radio-broadcasting styles. Despite the fact that few Latin American radio announcers receive formal training in pronunciation and diction, a comparative study of several dialects indicates that a surprising degree of homogeneity exists in the radio-broadcasting styles, which at the same time often reflect semiconscious sociolinguistic stratification.
