The glossing of the Early Irish law tracts
This paper looks at how the legal texts composed in the Old Irish period were read, interpreted and analysed, taking in turn glossing on texts in the vernacular in the Old Irish period, glossing in the later periods, with special attention given to etymological glosses, evidence for the glosses being read in conjunction with the main text rather than as a substitute for it, and finally how glossed copies were used in the compiling of legal digests or florilegia.
